Amazon CloudWatch is a monitoring service for Amazon Web Services cloud resources and the applications you run on Amazon Web Services.

You can use Amazon CloudWatch to collect and track metrics, collect and monitor log files, set alarms, and automatically react to changes in your Amazon Web Services resources.

What is Amazon CloudWatch?

CloudWatch enables real-time monitoring of AWS resources such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances, Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes, Elastic Load Balancing, and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) instances.

The application automatically collects and provides metrics for CPU utilization, latency, and request counts. Users can also stipulate additional metrics to be monitored, such as memory usage, transaction volumes, or error rates.

How CloudWatch Service Works

Amazon CloudWatch is basically a metrics repository. An AWS service"such as Amazon EC2"puts metrics into the repository, and you retrieve statistics based on those metrics.

If you put your own custom metrics into the repository, you can retrieve statistics on these metrics as well. You can use metrics to calculate statistics and then present the data graphically in the CloudWatch console.
